International Educator of the Year Award Luncheon - Malcolm Gladwell - David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants
Author of five New York Times bestsellers

Thursday, April 16, 2015 12:15 PM - 1:30 PM

This event raises support for our International Education Program. Program passes will not be accepted for this event. Etihad Airways, which offers flights to the United Arab Emirates from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, has donated two business class tickets to the Council's Educator of the Year luncheon. The drawing for the two-ticket package will be done at the luncheon and awarded at the end of the program. Etihad is a Council supporter and its home base is in the Emirates, a nation known for its vigorous support of public education.

The speaker for the Council's annual International Educator of the Year luncheon, best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, has an understanding of the mission of a teacher. He once wrote, "It's not how much money we make that ultimately makes us happy between nine and five. It's whether or not our work fulfills us. Being a teacher is meaningful."

The Council created our International Education Program 11 years ago to help North Texas teachers with their meaningful, worthwhile and important mission of encouraging young minds to explore the world beyond their campuses. Since 2008 our International Educator Award Luncheon has not only honored a wonderful educator, but has been a significant fundraiser supporting our respected, effective International Education Program as it provides key materials for students in public, private, charter and home-school environments.

The International Educator of the Year Award is a tribute to that extraordinary education professional who refuses to let relevant learning be limited by classroom walls or out-of-date textbooks. This enthusiastic Educator has a resilient teacher's spirit that shows students how global is local, how international issues affect their lives and how, when they pursue global knowledge and opportunities, the world belongs to them and they will not finish second-best in global academic and career accomplishments.

Guest speaker Gladwell's latest book will provide the appropriate subjects as he addresses supporters of improving education and student advancement at this special fundraiser. David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants deals with challenges faced on life's journey, including difficulties found in classrooms and education.

Gladwell, a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1996, was named to TIME Magazine's list of "100 Most Influential People" in 2005. He'd burst onto the mega-seller book scene in 2000 with The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. The book became must-reading in classes, offices and homes, inspiring discussions and published contemplations across the nation.
