Did Ronald Reagan, in reaction to decades of the New Deal, work "to restore democracy by bolstering capitalism" and increase the American access to personal liberty? H.W. Brands, a University of Texas professor and historian, asserts that in his latest book Reagan: The Life. Aided by previously unavailable sources, Brands explores such things as the future conservative icon's support for the father of the New Deal, President Franklin Roosevelt. It also examines Reagan's ambitions in his youth and his rise in politics.

This not Brand's first historical volume - he is a prolific author, having turned out more than 25 books since his first in 1988, Cold Warriors: Eisenhower's Generation and American Foreign Policy. Brands' 2002 book, The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and Traitor to His Class: The Privileged Life and Radical Presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a Pulitzer finalist in 2009.

Though he was raised in Oregon and educated at Stanford, he has a definite link to Texas beyond the university in Austin and Texas A&M where he taught for 17 years. In 2004 he published Lone Star Nation: The Epic Story of the Battle for Texas independence.
