Saved the food stamp program? Oversaw the plan to kill Osama bin Laden? Managed deep cuts in Pentagon spending? Publicly criticized President Obama's Iraq and Syria policies?

Could one person have a hand in all of those things? Yes, if that person is Leon Panetta.

He has a record of public service that touches many of the highest levels of American government including serving as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (2009-2011) and Secretary of Defense (2011-2013).

Panetta's recently published memoir Worthy Fights examines many of the issues that made headlines during his career and some that didn't.

Publisher Penguin Books describes Worthy Fights, subtitled A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace, as "a testament to a lost kind of political leadership, which favors progress and duty to country over partisanship."

The book became a lightning rod for publicity as Panetta began making post-publication appearances last fall. He drew journalists' and interviewers' attention because of his candid criticism of the current president's policies regarding both Iraq and Syria. In early February, U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) announced that Panetta would be among Washington's former office-holders, including the-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, called to testify (probably in April) during the House Select Committee's investigation of the attack on Benghazi.

The New York Times Sunday Book Review opined, "Young people searching for the role model of a public servant will find few as good as Panetta, and if they are willing to forgive the lack of uplifting prose, they will discover in Worthy Fights a plausible path to power and achievement."
