Bill Browder - Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice
Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Hermitage Capital Management

Wednesday, April 22, 2015 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Please note that this program is on WEDNESDAY, April 22.

Bill Browder is an American with a terrifying Russian story of high finance and murder.

It sounds like fiction. It sounds like film. Yet, it is fact. It is a fatal clash of cultures - one American-style capitalism, the other Russian criminal brutality-fatal brutality.

The story is told in Browder's riveting book, Red Notice A True Story of High Finance, Murder and One Man's Fight for Justice.

Browder, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management, is engaged in a search for justice while on a mission to expose corruption in the new Russian system nurtured by Vladimir Putin.

Perhaps there is some irony in the fact that American financier Browder's journey took him from America's mythical mob city of Chicago to post-Soviet Russia, a national under reconstruction with an atmosphere of mobster rule.

Browder, a veteran in the financial industry, had become leader of Russia's largest investment fund since the Soviet collapse. He also was hoping to give Russian business a western-style transparency. But when Putin took over, things changed for Browder.

He was barred from Russia and his young attorney Sergei Magnitsky, after testifying against the corrupt oligarchs of the Putin era, was arrested and held for a year. Then, as Browder writes, on Nov. 15, 2009, the attorney, handcuffed to a bedrail in an isolation chamber, was beaten to death by 8 guards.

That event transformed Browder into a man determined that justice and truth would triumph over Putin's Russia.

Browder's book title, Red Notice, comes from the term for an Interpol bulletin designed to result in the arrest of an individual - the Russians wanted Interpol to hold Browder for tax evasion, but Interpol denied the bulletin because it was politically motivated.
