Mexico's Minister of Foreign Affairs - His Excellency José Antonio Meade
Strengthening the Partnership: Mexico & Texas - New Opportunities in Mexico/Texas Relations

Friday, July 10, 2015 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

His Excellency Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena

Mexico's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the honorable José Antonio Meade, provides the perfect powerful closing program for our 2015 series, Strengthening the Partnership: Mexico & Texas.

His topic for the Council program is "New Opportunities in Mexico/Texas Relations." An enthusiastic supporter of his nation's economic opportunities, Minister Meade believes that "the North American region stands at a crossroads, and Mexico is poised to achieve its full potential. Today, as a result of the most ambitious reforms our country has adopted in decades, Mexico enters a new era of opportunities. Together with the United States and Canada, we are working towards strengthening our integration and the competitiveness of our region in a new global context. "

A native of Mexico, Minister Meade has a degree in economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México; a law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México; and a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University. He has also taught at the university level. At both ITAM and Yale he taught courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. He also taught Economic Analysis of the Law at ITAM's Masters Program in Public Policy.

His education and his experience in banking served as a sturdy foundation for his public service to Mexico. His offices have included Chief Executive Officer of Finaniera Rural; several offices in the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit leading to service as Secretary of Finance; and Secretary of Energy. He became Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2012.

Last year, in an interview with the Houston Chronicle, before an appearance at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy, the minister demonstrated his belief in his nation's economy when he spoke of international opportunties. He said, "These countries, these economies, these firms, they're looking at Mexico and they're seeing the potential, and that's why they're investing."
