"Mona Eltahawy relishes the radical feminist Muslim label," wrote The Independent. In an interview in The New York Times, the author/journalist declared, "I'm pointing out what the enemy is. And the enemy is misogyny and patriarchy.” She is consistently frank, as evidenced in the title of her recently published book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution. One review described the book as "a passionate manifesto decrying misogyny in the Arab world."

An American citizen since 2011, Eltahawy was born in Port Said, Egypt, then her family moved to the United Kingdom, settling in Glasgow. At 15, the family moved to Saudi Arabia, and, she told The Guardian, "As a woman in Saudi Arabia, you have one of two options. You either lose your mind – which at first happened to me because I fell into a deep depression – or you become a feminist."

Publicity for her book explains that "Eltahawy has traveled across the Middle East and North Africa, meeting with women and listening to their stories. Her book is a plea for outrage and action on their behalf, confronting the 'toxic mix of culture and religion that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend.' A manifesto motivated by hope and fury in equal measure, Headscarves and Hymens is as illuminating as it is incendiary."

She has been a journalist for more than two decades, serving as a correspondent for Reuters in Cairo and Jerusalem and writing for many well-known publications such as The Guardian, The Washington Post, the International Herald-Tribune and U.S. News and World Report.
