Ambassador Robert Jordan - Desert Diplomat - McKinney
Diplomat in Residence and Adjunct Professor of Political Science, John G. Tower Center for Political Studies, Southern Methodist University

Tuesday, July 7, 2015 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Ambassador Robert Jordan's experience has made him an authority on the nuances and messages Middle Eastern diplomacy. He was the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 2001 to 2003, immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States. It was a critical time for the United States and nations in the region and inspired the ambassador's book, Desert Diplomat: Inside Saudi Arabia Following 9/11.

Jordan's knowledge of this diplomatically difficult arena has made him a go-to source for journalists. When Saudi Arabia's King Salman recently decided not to attend a presidential summit at Camp David, the ambassador told CNBC's Closing Bell that the decision had "the element of a snub." He also said of the U.S./Saudi relationship, "I don't think we're quite ready for a divorce but I do think some marriage counseling is in order." He explained, "The Saudis and the Gulf monarchies feel that they really may be in the midst in a major shift in the balance in the Middle East in Iran's favor. If sanctions are lifted, Iran has billions of dollars to use against these monarchs in subtle ways."

Ambassador Jordan, a partner at Baker Botts LLP in Dallas since 2004, leads the firm's Middle East practice, focusing on international business, government relations, and international arbitration and dispute resolution. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, serves as president of the Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations and is vice chairman of the board of directors of the John G. Tower Center for Political Studies at Southern Methodist University. At SMU he also is diplomat in residence, adjunct professor of political science and teaches a course on the Middle East. In 2007, the Dallas Bar Foundation presented him with its Fellows Award.
