His Excellency Peter Wittig - U.S.-German Relations: Challenges and Opportunities in a World in Turmoil
Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the U.S.

Thursday, May 12, 2016 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Peter Wittig, the German Ambassador to the United States since 2014, is an experienced diplomat with interests in many issues ranging from the environment and the refugee crises perplexing nations in the European Union to the challenge of dealing with Russia and Ukraine.

In an interview with Politico in December, Ambassador Wittig said the Ukrainian crisis was "a signature moment, because it propelled us [Germany] into a leadership role that the chancellor [Angela Merkel] had not sought — it just happened by events."

He also said, "We don’t want to bring Russia down to its knees economically. We don’t want a more nationalist Russia. We want a Russia that is part and parcel of the common European order.”

As the refugee crisis intensified, the ambassador, in a column for the Huffington Post in September, wrote, "The refugee crisis is not only a European challenge, but rather one facing Western civilization and what we stand for. …We need an international effort to end the civil war and bloodshed in Syria, to further stabilize places like Afghanistan and Iraq, and to address the shortcomings in many countries of Sub-Saharan Africa."

Prior to taking his current post, Ambassador Wittig served as the German Ambassador to the United Nations in New York and was a member of the UN Security Council 2011-12. His global perspective was aided by his previous service as Director-General for United Nations and Global issues at the German Foreign Office in Berlin.

A veteran of foreign service since 1982, he served as Ambassador to both Lebanon and Cyprus and, his biography says, "has acquired extensive knowledge of the Middle East."
