James Rosebush - What Made Ronald Reagan Great and Why It Matters
Founder and CEO, GrowthStrategy Incorporated; Special Assistant to the President in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for President Reagan; Chief of Staff to the First Lady Nancy Reagan

Tuesday, May 24, 2016 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM

The title of James Rosebush’s new book is True Reagan: What Made Ronald Reagan Great and Why It Matters. And, as he has explained, the book isn’t so much about what Reagan did as it is about “who he was.”

“Reagan was character-driven. He never talked about himself. He talked about America,” the author and successful business executive told Breitbart News Daily in an interview after the death of Nancy Reagan.

Rosebush was the longest-serving Chief of Staff to the First Lady. Praising Nancy Reagan’s loving support of her husband and his goals, Rosebush said, “I always say the American taxpayer got a good deal with Nancy Reagan.”

Before Rosebush achieved success with Growth Strategy, Inc., as a philanthropic wealth advisor, he worked in the White House in several positions, including serving as President Reagan’s “point man” on philanthropy and public-private partnerships and managing a favorite Reagan domestic program, Private Sector Initiatives.

His responsibilities and relationships with the first couple provided Rosebush with a splendid vantage point to watch the nation’s 40th president work. In True Reagan, his observations and experiences have been converted from memories into what he sees as explanations of a private president and inspirations for 21st century Americans.

As Rosebush has explained, “Reagan confounded most of his biographers. He kept his personality obscure and hidden from view. He was known throughout the world as an effective leader yet the world was never on intimate terms with him. The fact is that Reagan, now ranked by every poll as in the top five all presidents in American history, was a success because of his inner character, values, and faith.”

In the White House, Rosebush managed the First Lady’s official activities including press and media, scheduling, projects and policy (including the anti-drug campaign).

He also handled worldwide State Visits, traveling with the Reagans and negotiating with host country leaders. In this role, he “negotiated with Russian officials for the historic bi-lateral meeting between Reagan and Gorbachev.”

In 1987, he published his first book, First Lady, Public Wife: A Behind-the-Scenes History of the Evolving Role of First Ladies in American Public Life.
