Meridian Young Professionals: Happy Hour and Meet & Greet with Joshua Cooper Ramo
Vice Chairman and Co-CEO, Kissinger Associates

Tuesday, May 31, 2016 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM

Any assessment of the life of Joshua Cooper Ramo has to include these terms: observer, thinker, participant.

He’s not a traditional executive dragging in 20th century international applications into 21st century situations. Ramo is, to coin a phrase, a “Meridian-minded thinker,” always at the zenith of an approach to an ever-changing world.

He is a forward-thinker, seeing a path to the future in a world where elements are connected almost beyond anything conceived in science fiction. He’s a writer, business advisor, security strategist and global analyst living in both Beijing and New York.

With all of that providing a spectacular vantage point, this New Mexico-raised international thinker has written The Seventh Sense, destined to be another best-seller for Ramo. Its subtitle is Power, Fortune and Survival in the Age of Networks.

According to the book’s summary, he “explores what all the successful figures of this age see and feel: the disruptive force of networks in trade, politics, DNA, finance, the internet, and more. He introduces a new way of seeing the world, one which is based on his years advising generals, CEOs, and politicians.”

(FYI: Your ticket to this Tuesday, May 31, program in the Rosewood Crescent Garden Room includes light snacks and one drink per person at the 6:30 p.m. meet-n-greet. The program begins at 7 p.m.)

This young intellectual is regarded as a protégé of the legendary diplomat Henry Kissinger. He is, in fact, the Vice Chairman and Co-CEO of Kissinger Associates, the geostrategic advisory firm founded by the former U.S. Secretary of State.

But that doesn’t keep Ramo from disagreeing with Kissinger, as was evident in Ramo’s runaway 2009 bestseller, The Age of the Unthinkable, subtitled Why the New World Disorder Constantly Surprises Us and What We Can Do About it.

After it was published, The New Yorker reported that Kissinger hosted a party to celebrate his young friend’s success and said that the book “has one basic theme that is a little difficult for me, which is that my generation is sort of a bunch of dodos.”

Ramo, who has degrees from both the University of Chicago and NYU, once oversaw digital operations at TIME Magazine and covered technology. He speaks Mandarin and is a globally respected advisor on matters involving China and investments. His resume includes serving as an international advisor to some of the largest and most successful companies and investors on the planet. And he’s on the board of Starbucks and FedEx.

Author Walter Isaacson, a former Council speaker and the man who hired Ramo at TIME Magazine in 1996, said of his friend’s latest work, “Ramo has written a book that combines historic swept and incisive detail. The Seventh Sense is a concept every businessman diplomat or student should aspire to master.”
