The President’s Book of Secrets - Dallas
David Priess, Director of Analytic Services, Analytic Advantage, Inc. & Former Daily Intelligence Briefer, CIA

Friday, October 21, 2016 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM

In a land where acronyms reign –SCOTUS, FBI, CIA – it is the PDB for POTUS that is a report balanced between TMI and WTH.

What The Heck is PDB? It’s the President’s Daily Briefing, a CIA-compiled collection of significant information – not Too Much Information -- for POTUS, the President of the United States.

The Council’s Thursday, October 20 speaker, David Priess, has firsthand knowledge. During both the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, he was a daily intelligence briefer for the CIA. His experience with the PDB led him to write The President’s Book of Secrets: The Untold Story of Intelligence Briefings to America’s Presidents, from Kennedy to Obama.

Writing in Foreign Affairs magazine earlier this year, the former CIA officer explained, “What insiders simply call ‘the book’ represents the highest fulfillment of the intelligence mission: to provide accurate, timely, and objective information from classified and unclassified sources alike to help the president defend the homeland and protect U.S. interests abroad.”

Among the revelations in the book by Dr. Priess: Richard Nixon “distrusted the CIA and often ignored” the PDB, former CIA Director George H. W. Bush read it thoroughly and President Obama’s PDB arrives via his iPad.

Still, many secrets remain secrets. But Dr. Priess provides a special understanding of the daily PDB operation, focusing on how presidents used the information and how having it readily available affected the nation.

The author, who earned a Ph.D. in political science from Duke University, is a prolific writer for security and policy journals. He currently is Director of Analytic Services for Analytic Advantage, Inc., a company that offers “specialized training, mentoring, and consulting to the Intelligence Community, other government offices, and the private sector.”
