“There are loads of countries that have nice written constitutions like ours. But there aren’t loads of countries where they’re followed.” – Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. Consider these entries on one man’s resumé: Stanford, Oxford and Harvard – three academic triumphs followed by Watergate Special Prosecution Force, Special Counsel for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, law professor at Harvard and Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. That list is not even near being the complete resume for Stephen Breyer. It is his current title that carries the substantial weight: Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1994. Justice Breyer headlines our Monday, December 12, program in Fort Worth and our Tuesday, December 13, program in Dallas. Both programs are “Conversations with Justice Breyer” and will be moderated by Council President Jim Falk. Justice Breyer’s most recent book is The Court and the World: American Law and the New Global Realities. In 2005 he published his first book, Active Liberty: Interpreting Our Democratic Constitution, and in 2010 he released his second book, Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge’s View. Among some of the Justice’s most quoted comments are these: “Nobody wants a judge to be subject to the political whim of the moment.” And, “It's important to every American that the law protect his or her basic liberty.”
