Gen. David H. Petraeus (US Army, Retired)
Partner, KKR; Chairman, KKR Global Institute

Friday, September 30, 2016 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Retired U.S. Army Four Star General David Petraeus’ legendary 37-year military career endured from the Cold War well into the War on Terror and the “9/11 generation.”

He is described in his biography as “one of the most prominent U.S. military figures of the post-9/11 era.” He also served as Director of the CIA (2011-12), confirmed for the position by a 94-0 vote in the U.S. Senate.

His accomplishments, expectations for American military and intelligence, involvement in global issues and other topics will be addressed when Council President Jim Falk moderates a conversation with Gen. Petraeus on Friday, September 30 at Dallas City Performance Hall. The event is presented in cooperation with the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

Currently, Gen. Petraeus is Chairman of KKR Global Institute, a part of the international investment firm KKR & Co. LP, formerly Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. The KKR Global Institute, according to the firm, “is an integral part of the KKR investment process — working in partnership with KKR deal teams, portfolio companies and limited partners to help enable smarter investing through a better understanding of the world.”

He is also a Visiting Professor at CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College, a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California, and a Senior Fellow at Harvard University, as well as a personal venture investor.

In his CIA role, he is said to have led the Agency as it “played the central role in a number of important achievements in the global war on terror.”

That understanding was emphasized at the general’s August 31, 2011, military retirement ceremony. Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn III declared, “No one has played a more important role leading this new generation on the battlefield … General Petraeus has been both a combat leader and a leading strategist in this post-9/11 world. It is rare for a leader to have both the endurance and charisma to lead troops in war and the force of mind to shape strategy for war.”

Gen. Petraeus’ military career included, according to his biography, “assignments in Cold War Europe, Central America, the United States, Haiti, Bosnia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and the greater Middle East. His career culminated with six consecutive commands as a general officer, five of which were in combat, a record believed to be unmatched in the post-World War II era.”
