His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba
Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the United States

Thursday, October 20, 2016 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

"Fifteen years after 9/11, the long war against extremism continues. It is now a global fight against a borderless plague."
– H.E. Yousef Al Otaiba, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the United States.

Since taking his position in Washington in 2008, UAE Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba has experienced firsthand the diplomatic challenges in a post-9/11 world. But these difficulties have not diminished his optimism for establishing a peaceful, tolerant world of beneficial opportunities.

How could that goal be made possible? The ambassador will discuss these topics and others key to U.S./UAE relationships and opportunities in "A Conversation With His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba, United Arab Emirates," a free program from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 20, at the Jones Great Hall in the Meadows Museum on the SMU Campus.

Moderating the conversation is an experienced diplomat who is familiar with the region, Robert Jordan, U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia (2001-2003), Diplomat-in-Residence at the Tower Center and a member of the board of directors of the World Affairs Council.

In the 9/11 anniversary column Ambassador Al Otaiba wrote for Fox News online, he declared that it is Arabs "who must lead in this fight for tolerance and humanity, with force and with ideas, where we pray and where we live, online, in the classroom and on the battlefield."

He also wrote, "Working with the U.S. and other international partners, we are also attacking the ideology of the extremists."

In the Fox column, Ambassador Al Otaiba presented a sweeping explanation of the UAE strategies to "reinforce Islam's true values based on dialogue, tolerance, moderation and peace."

He also looked within the challenges of modern youth in the UAE. "We also recognize the vital importance of skills training and job opportunities for youth at home and across the region to encourage their entrance into the workforce rather than let them fall prey to terrorist recruitment."

As is noted in his official biography, the ambassador has been in the vanguard of creating these opportunities, having "worked closely with his counterparts in government and with business leaders to promote greater UAE and U.S. economic and trade ties."
