American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant
Ronald White, The New York Times Bestselling Author

Wednesday, October 26, 2016 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM

The shorthand, classroom description of Ulysses S. Grant is that he was the general who led the North to a defeat of Robert E. Lee's South in the War Between the States and later became president. In the American classroom, though, Grant's wife is rarely mentioned, but as author Ronald C. White discovered, Julia Dent Grant is a significant element in the life of this complicated man.

And though he fell from favor in America, Grant was once held in such high regard in the nation that he was included with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in "the Trinity of Great American Leaders."

What is the story of U.S. Grant? White, who wrote The New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln: A Biography, turns his keen historic eye toward the general in American Ulysses: A Life of U.S. Grant.

White will discuss this American leader at a breakfast program on Wednesday, October 26, at the Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco.

White spent seven years researching previously unexamined documents about the life and decisions Grant encountered. The research revealed, according to the biographer, a man who was "a generous, curious, introspective man and leader—a willing delegator with a natural gift for managing the rampaging egos of his fellow officers."

Plus, according to White's work, Grant's wife, Julia Dent Grant, "long marginalized in the historic record, emerges in her own right as a spirited and influential partner."

White also examines Grant's "passionate" defense of equal rights after the Civil War, and, notes that after he was elected president in 1868, he used the federal government's power to fight the racist Ku Klux Klan. He also describes Grant as "the first president to state that the government’s policy toward American Indians was immoral."

In addition to the Grant and Lincoln biographies, White is also the author of two more books about the nation's 16th president: Lincoln's Greatest Speech: The Second Inaugural and The Eloquent President A Portrait of Lincoln Through His Words.

White attended Northwestern University, graduated from UCLA and the Princeton Theological Seminary and earned a Ph.D. in Religion and History from Princeton.
