IPS: Cuba-U.S. Relations
What Are They Now?

Friday, April 28, 2017 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

The closing program of the Council’s 2017 International Perspectives Series focuses on a longtime diplomatic challenge to United States presidents and administrations.

The topic is “Cuba-U.S. Relations – What Are They Now?”

Clearly, the relationship has changed. After all, the focal point of American irritation, Cuba’s longtime leader Fidel Castro died on November 25. He had not been active in person but he had been influential in spirit since his brother Raúl took over the presidency.

Earlier in the year, in March, President Barak Obama became the first sitting president to visit Cuba since Calvin Coolidge’s trip in 1928.

The Council’s speaker is Carla Anne Robbins, adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an award-winning journalist and foreign policy analyst, having served as deputy editorial page editor at The New York Times and chief diplomatic correspondent at The Wall Street Journal. Her reporting career took her to Latin America, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

She was part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning efforts while at The Wall Street Journal. In 1999, she was co-winner of the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting on the Russian financial crisis and in 2000, she was co-winner of the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting on the post-Cold War defense budget.

In her post-journalism career, Dr. Robbins is faculty director of the Master of International Affairs program and clinical professor of national security studies at Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs.

Dr. Robbins is a graduate of Wellesley College and received a Ph.D in political science from U.C., Berkeley. She was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard and a Media Fellow at Stanford.
