The Great Equalizer: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone - Frisco
David Smick, Chairman & CEO, Johnson Smick International; Publisher, International Economy

Thursday, January 19, 2017 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM

Just a few days before the United States swears in a new president, the Council will present programs in Dallas and Frisco featuring David Smick, a renowned global financial strategist whose latest book is The Great Equalizier: How Main Street Capitalism Can Create an Economy for Everyone.

The book hits the shelves on January 10, Smick speaks on January 18 and 19 and the presidential inauguration is on January 20. In that busy period early in 2017, it is likely that the American and global economies will be on the minds of people who have national and international interests.

And Smick has a reputation for being, his bio says, "one of the most insightful financial market strategists in the world." As Smick explains in his new book, "Main Street Capitalism" is a more "populist" economy than the entrenched "Corporate Capitalism of inside deal-making, elite special privileged and dominance by large institutions."

On, the opening description of The Great Equalizer offers a positive note. It reads, "The experts say that America’s best days are behind us, that mediocre long-term economic growth is baked in the cake, and that politically, socially, and racially, the United States will continue to tear itself apart. But David Smick—hedge fund strategist and author of the 2008 bestseller The World Is Curved—argues that the experts are wrong."

(FYI: Smick's bestselling 2008 book, The World Is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy, is regarded as a response to The New York Times columnist and occasional Council speaker Thomas Friedman's bestseller, The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century.)

As for The Great Equalizer, the respected Kirkus Review declares that "Smick's call for a fairer capitalism makes for bracing reading for students of the modern economy and polity."

In addition to writing about the global economy, Smick also is chairman & CEO of Johnson Smick International, the Washington-based financial market advisory firm founded in 1985. He is editor/publisher of the quarterly, The International Economy, which he founded in 1987.
