'The Council's Meridian: Global Young Professionals have the opportunity on Wednesday, February 8, to learn "Leadership Lessons" from a man tasked with leading every day, Dallas Federal Reserve Bank President and CEO, Robert S. Kaplan.

He also is the author of a highly regarded 2015 book about leadership, What You Really Need to Lead: The Power of Thinking and Acting Like an Owner.

Kaplan has been the 13th president and CEO of the Dallas Fed since September 8, 2015. Before joining the Fed, Kaplan was the Martin Marshall Professor of Management Practice and a Senior Associate Dean at Harvard Business School. He also had a decades-long career in management with The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.

In addition to leading the Dallas Fed, Kaplan represents the Eleventh Federal Reserve District on the Federal Open Market Committee, which is responsible for "the formulation of U.S. Monetary policy." He oversees the 1,200 Dallas Fed employees.

He was born and raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.

Prior to joining Harvard in 2006, Kaplan was vice chairman of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. with global responsibility for the firm's Investment Banking and Investment Management. He served on the firm's Management Committee and was co-chairman of the firm’s Partnership Committee and chairman of the Goldman Sachs Pine Street Leadership Program.

During his 23-year career at Goldman Sachs, he also was head of the Corporate Finance Department, head of Asia-Pacific Investment Banking and head of the high-yield department in Investment Banking. He became a partner in 1990 and when left the firm for Harvard in 2006, he received the honorary title of senior director.

His civic positions include co-chairman of Project A.L.S. and co-chairman of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, a global venture philanthropy firm that addresses social issues. He is also a board member of Harvard Medical School.
