Syria: Dark at the Crossing
Elliot Ackerman, Author and Journalist

Friday, February 24, 2017 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

"A timely novel about tension at the border between Turkey and Syria—and about the personal costs involved in trying to join the conflict in the Middle East."Kirkus Review of Elliot Ackerman's latest book, Dark at the Crossing

The Council's Friday, February 24, programs in Dallas and McKinney examine the very real emotions, personal conflicts and international challenges that have created a platform for dramatic fiction. Dr. Larry Allums, Executive Director of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, will introduce him in Dallas.

The title of the presentation is "Syria: Dark at the Crossing" and the speaker is author Elliot Ackerman, described in The New Yorker as "a writer based in Istanbul."

The respected Kirkus Review description of his latest book, Dark at the Crossing, says Ackerman "humanizes a war fraught with tragedy and seemingly without resolution."

Ackerman's first novel, Green on Blue, which he discussed in a Dallas Museum of Art/World Affairs Council program in March 2015, is focused on the wartime challenges of an Afghan militia member, Aziz.

Dark at the Crossing, according to a review in Publisher's Weekly, "presents a stark and multifaceted portrait of the civil war in Syria." It mentions names in conflict that became references on the American presidential campaign trail and in headlines around the world, i.e. Aleppo.

The author has some understanding of the challenges of life in wartime. According to his biography, this former White House Fellow was a Marine for 8 years and "served five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan where he received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart."

Ackerman is a summa cum laude graduate of Tufts University and he earned a Masters Degree in International Affairs from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts.
