Meridians YP: The Next Chapter in U.S./Mexico Relations: A Conversation with Amb. Antonio "Tony" Garza
Ambassador Antonio Garza, Counsel in the Mexico City office of White & Case LLP; Chairman, Vianovo Ventures; U.S. Ambassador to Mexico (2002-2009)

Tuesday, May 2, 2017 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

"Until you address border security, I don’t think you’re going to create an environment in the United States where comprehensive immigration reform is possible. You have to do them at the same time. The challenge is finding a moment when there’s sufficient political will in Washington." – from a May 2009 Texas Monthly interview with outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Antonio "Tony" Garza (2002-2009).

Ambassador Tony Garza, a native of Brownsville in South Texas and a grandson of Mexican immigrants, rose to hold some of the most influential offices in Texas government.

And, as he meets with the Council's Meridian: Global Young Professionals on Tuesday, May 2, there will be no shortage of "hot button topics" for the program titled "The Next Chapter in U.S./Mexico Relations: A Conversation with Ambassador Tony Garza."

The future of NAFTA, border taxes, trade, immigration, security and paying for "the wall" have been catching the spotlight of "transnational" discussion since the presidential campaign trail opened. Now, the discussions have become even more intense with the arrival of the Trump administration in Washington.

This program should provide Meridians, Latino Center for Leadership Development members and members of the World Affairs Council the opportunity to learn about the dynamics affecting the future of U.S.-Mexico relations.

Ambassador Garza is an experienced hand at both the U.S.-Mexico relationship and Texas politics. In 2002, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico by President George W. Bush. Before that, Garza was Texas Secretary of State 1995-97 and Senior Policy Advisor to Gov. Bush. Garza also served as the Chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission (1999-2002), the state's energy regulatory agency.

Ambassador Garza's diplomatic tenure in Mexico was so successful that, as he was leaving his post, Mexico presented him with the Aguila Azteca, i.e., the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor the Mexican government bestows on a foreign national.

Now, Ambassador Garza serves as Counsel in the Mexico City office of White & Case LLP, a leading global law firm with 39 offices in 26 nations. He also is chairman of Vianovo Ventures, a management consultancy with a focus on cross-border business development.

The Ambassador earned a BBA at the University of Texas at Austin and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Southern Methodist University School of Law. He's been honored as a distinguished alumnus at both schools and is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the District of Columbia Bar and has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

If you are a member of the Contributors' Circle, you may register for Ambassador Garza's dinner & program at 7 PM following his appearance at this Meridian event. Tickets here.
