CANCELLED - The French Election: The Reshaping of France?
Frédéric Bozo, Senior Fellow, Transatlantic Academy, Washington, D.C.

Thursday, April 6, 2017 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Voting in the French election begins April 23 and the nation's foreign policies are among the issues. One of the front-running candidates is promising a "Frexit" – a withdrawal from the European Union.

As the campaigning, reminiscent of the recent U.S. presidential campaign, proceeds, France is facing international challenges because of shared issues, i.e., the EU, borders, refugees, Germany's growing power and other challenges.

On Thursday, April 6, the Council presents Dr. Frédéric Bozo, a scholar/author with an experienced grasp of the French political condition. He'll discuss "The French Election: The Reshaping of France?".

Dr. Bozo is a Senior Fellow at the Transatlantic Academy in Washington, D.C. He also is a professor at the Sorbonne Nouvelle (University of Paris III), where he has taught contemporary history and international relations since 2005.

His 2016 book, A History of the Iraq Crisis: France, the United States, and Iraq, 1991-2003 will be available at the Council program. Dr. Bozo based it on "exclusive French archival sources and numerous interviews with former officials in both countries." And it describes the Iraq crisis as leading to "a confrontation between two long-time allies of an intensity unprecedented since the time of Charles de Gaulle, and to deep divisions within Europe, the Atlantic alliance, and the international community as a whole."

Among Dr. Bozo's books are Visions of the End of the Cold War in Europe, 1945-1990 (2012). Mitterrand, the End of the Cold War, and German Unification (2009) and the recently published French Foreign Policy Since 1945: An Introduction.

He was educated at the Ecole normale supérieure and Sciences Po. He received his PhD in contemporary history from the University of Paris X-Nanterre (1993) and his Habilitation from the Sorbonne Nouvelle (1997).
