What ISIS Really Wants
Graeme Wood, National Correspondent, The Atlantic

Tuesday, April 25, 2017 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

A writer educated in Dallas delves into the magnetism of Islamic militancy and finds an ISIS propagandist born and raised in Plano. What are the chances?

Writer Graeme Wood's topic at his Tuesday, April 25, Council appearance is "What ISIS Really Wants."

Some of that answer was derived from Wood's encounter with a Texan who'd changed nations. An experienced global journalist, Wood, a National Correspondent for The Atlantic, has lately been praised as the author of The Way of the Strangers, his book discussing ISIS militants and their religious values.

In March of 2015, in a widely praised analysis for The Atlantic, Wood outlined the challenges of understanding, pursuing and stopping ISIS.

One of the topics of Wood's work is the ISIS propagandist Yahya Abu Hassan ibn Sharaf. Wood is a 1997 graduate of St. Mark's in Dallas and Yahya Sharaf is formerly John Georgelas, born and raised in Plano, Texas.

Wood's book The Way of the Strangers was reviewed in The New York Times by Dexter Filkins, a former Baghdad correspondent for The Times who is currently a staff writer at The New Yorker.

Filkins wrote, "The value of The Way of the Strangers is that it gives the lie to the notion, repeated so often in the West as to become a cliché, that ISIS zealots are betraying Islam, and that their practices are un-Islamic. They are Islamic, and in that sense, the end-state of their murderous program is not hard to discern."
