The Relentless Invention of Modern India
Adam Roberts, European Business and Finance Correspondent and former South Asia Correspondent, The Economist

Tuesday, May 2, 2017 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

India? Is it always a question mark?

The person who has an educated, eyewitness answer to that question is Adam Roberts, currently the European business and finance correspondent for The Economist. Before that he spent five years in India while serving as the South Asia correspondent for the publication.

He reported on politics, national issues and other events while covering India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and other nations in the region.

His Council programs are titled "The Relentless Invention of Modern India." That is the subtitle of Roberts' latest book, Superfast Primetime Ultimate Nation.

It may be the only book the Council has ever recommended that has a prognosticating parrot as a main character predicting the future of a nation that just keeps trying to succeed.

Roberts, in his exploration of India, found a fortune teller, Mr. Joshi, in a "slum in south Delhi who uses a soothsaying green parrot to make predictions" about the nation.

But, there is more to Roberts' exploration of India than the hope of getting a good reading from a parrot. He spent five years traveling the nation to meet with power-brokers and influential people to determine whether India "can become a truly great economic power" with enhanced influence abroad and important stability within the nation.

India faces some tangible challenges. Pollution and economic changes get the headlines. On March 7, the Times of India explored the fatal threat of pollution in a story headlined "Pollution, poor sanitation kill India's under-5 kids."

A recent International Monetary Fund assessment of India reported a more positive attitude toward the nation: "India’s overall outlook remains positive, although growth will slow temporarily as a result of disruptions to consumption and business activity from the recent withdrawal of high-denomination banknotes from circulation."

Roberts has an understanding of the "problems and the promises" for the nation.

Adam Roberts is also appearing at 7:30 AM on Thursday, May 3 at a breakfast at the Stonebriar Country Club. Tickets here.
