George Friedman
The Next Four Years: The Role of the US in the World

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 11:45 AM - 1:30 PM

“Presidents and other politicians manage the appearance of things, largely by manipulating the air and hope.” ― George Friedman, writing in The Next Decade: What the World Will Look Like (2012)

George Friedman has some advice based on decades of observation and analysis. He is the Austin-based, well-known “geopolitical forecaster and strategist on international affairs” and a best-selling author.

He founded the online international advisory site Geopolitical Futures. In his decades of monitoring the geopolitical dynamics on Planet Earth, he has focused not only what is happening next but whether it is something that is important to the future, i.e., “Does an event deserve more than just acknowledgement that it occurred? Will it have a continuing affect?”

In explaining the goal of Geopolitical Futures, the organization’s website says it “challenges two assumptions. First, that political leaders decide what they will do and individual actions can’t be predicted. Second, that there is no methodology for predicting non-quantitative events.”

Dr. Friedman says, “There is an assumption by most people that international affairs are unpredictable. I don't believe that's true and I think that can be seen in the books I've written." Two of his books, The Next 100 Years and Flashpoints: The Emerging Crisis in Europe, became New York Times best-sellers.

Among his points of interest and how they affect developments that change lives are refugee challenges, economic issues, military strategy and secret talks.

Dr. Friedman, who earned a Ph.D. in government at Cornell University, has a Bachelor Degree in political science from City College of New York. He founded Austin-based Stratfor in 1996, left the chairman’s post in May 2015 and founded Geopolitical Futures in 2015.

He also is a refugee – born in Budapest, Hungary, his family fled the Communist regime, eventually reaching the United States. He has described the experience as a “classic story of refugees making a new life in America.”
