Thomas Friedman - WAC Blockbuster Event!
Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - and How It Can Renew America

Friday, September 12, 2008 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

“Thomas Friedman defined the parameters around which globalization is being discussed. His impact on the national debate on the environment will be even greater.” -- Jim Falk, Council President & CEO

As consumer demand for energy around the globe increases and much international debate surrounds its effects on the environment, Thomas Friedman suggests that we are in dire need of a revolution; that is, a green revolution. Friedman argues that as we enter an energy-climate era in a globalized and increasingly flattening world, transformational breakthroughs must occur not only to “save the planet from overheating…[but also] to make America healthier, richer, more innovative, more productive, and more secure.” Building upon his groundbreaking analysis of globalization and the recent swell in the world’s population, Friedman will discuss how the convergence of these factors in our hot, flat and crowded planet necessitates reform. He claims that the environmental movement we are currently experiencing is more like a green “party” than a revolution. Following The World is Flat’s resounding influence on international business, Friedman’s ideas in his new book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded, are expected to impact fundamentally the role that America should play as it enters this era of energy modernization.

Thomas Friedman, three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, is a columnist for The New York Times and the bestselling author of The World Is Flat. He is the author of numerous books, including From Beirut to Jerusalem, which won both the National Book Award and the Overseas Press Club Award in 1989 and was on The New York Times bestseller list for nearly one year. He also wrote The Lexus and the Olive Tree, one of the best selling business books in 1999 and the winner of the 2000 Overseas Press Club Award for best nonfiction book on foreign policy. In 2005, The World Is Flat reached #1 on the Times’ bestseller list and was given the first Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award. Also that year, Friedman was named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report. His book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution – and How it Can Renew America, will be released on September 8, 2008.
