For decades, missile defense has been one of the hardest problems in national security. The threats have grown: more countries, more missiles, more advanced systems. The Golden Dome initiative aims to meet that challenge by building a next-generation shield over the U.S. homeland, using new technology and integrated systems to counter modern threats.

Lieutenant General Daniel Karbler spent his career at the heart of this work. He led missile defense operations at the highest levels and helped shape how America approaches deterrence and defense. He brings firsthand insight into what it takes to protect the homeland and what Golden Dome will demand to succeed.

We’ll explore what the Golden Dome initiative is and why it matters now. We’ll also look at the key challenges ahead – operational, strategic, and technical – and what success could mean for the U.S. and its allies.

Karbler (Ret.), U.S. Army, is a senior adviser (non-resident) with the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and a member of its advisory board.
