SUMMARY:Women in Journalism\, Reporting for Change
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is managed by the Sixth Floor Museum. \nHow did female journalists overcome barriers in American newsrooms during the 1960s and how did their work change the profession? \nDr. Tracy Everbach\, professor of journalism at the University of North Texas and former Dallas Morning News reporter\, explores the careers of women whose persistence and commitment to public service expanded opportunities in journalism and influenced generations of reporters. She examines the challenges they faced and the lasting impact of their work on the profession today. \nInspired by the Sixth Floor Museum’s special exhibition\, On Assignment: Dallas Times Herald 1963\, the program highlights the pioneering career of Vivian Castleberry\, whose reporting and editorial leadership brought greater attention to issues often overlooked by the mainstream press. Castleberry’s story demonstrates the role female journalists played in shaping both the news and the communities they served. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \n \nTracy Everbach\, Ph.D.\, is a journalism educator\, researcher and writer. Her research focuses on representations of gender and race in mass media\, women’s leadership in journalism\, and women in sports media. She has published four co-edited books\, as well as numerous academic journal articles\, book chapters\, and commentary. She worked for 14 years as a newspaper reporter\, including 12 years covering local news at The Dallas Morning News. She worked on in-depth projects examining domestic violence and juvenile killers and covered the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the 1993 federal raid on the Branch Davidian complex in Waco. She won several professional journalism awards\, including the Carole Kneeland Award from the Texas Governor’s Commission on Women\, and the PASS Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency.

SUMMARY:Golden Dome and the Future of U.S. Missile Defense
DESCRIPTION:Contributors’ Circle and Global Forum members are invited to a pre-event reception with the speaker starting at 5:30. To check if your membership qualifies\, sign in. \nFor decades\, missile defense has been one of the hardest problems in national security. The threats have grown: more countries\, more missiles\, more advanced systems. The Golden Dome initiative aims to meet that challenge by building a next-generation shield over the U.S. homeland\, using new technology and integrated systems to counter modern threats. \nLieutenant General Daniel Karbler spent his career at the heart of this work. He led missile defense operations at the highest levels and helped shape how America approaches deterrence and defense. He brings firsthand insight into what it takes to protect the homeland and what Golden Dome will demand to succeed. \nWe’ll explore what the Golden Dome initiative is and why it matters now. We’ll also look at the key challenges ahead – operational\, strategic\, and technical – and what success could mean for the U.S. and its allies. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nLieutenant General Daniel L. Karbler (Ret.)\, U.S. Army\, is a senior adviser (non-resident) with the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and a member of its advisory board. For over three decades\, Karbler served our nation in a variety of positions in the United States and around the world. An expert in complex air and missile defense and space operations\, he has extensive experience in effectively leading military commands\, conducting operations\, requirements and capability development\, test and evaluation\, and budget formulation. Throughout his tenure\, he oversaw changes in Department of Defense strategic missions and led major mergers\, restructuring\, and relocation of organizations as directed by the President of the United States. Prior to retiring from the Army as a Lieutenant General\, he led the U.S. Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command. He has conducted numerous interviews and guest lectured on the topics of strategic leadership at various think tank\, media\, and academic venues and is a published author with War on the Rocks. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR \n \nJoe DeAntona is the executive director of Requirements & Capabilities within Customer Growth and Transformation at Raytheon\, a business of RTX. He leads teams focused on global customer requirements\, leveraging industry-leading Raytheon technology and products to develop the most capable solutions.

SUMMARY:Nuclear and National Security: The Sovereign Power Race for AI Dominance
DESCRIPTION:The nation that controls reliable\, baseload\, carbon-free power will position itself well for the AI race – and that competition is already underway. Russia’s Rosatom has spent two decades quietly binding dozens of countries to 60-year nuclear dependency relationships\, while China is building more reactors than the rest of the world combined\, laying the energy foundation for sovereign AI compute at unprecedented scale. \nThis program will take the 30\,000-foot view of a contest most people don’t yet recognize as a contest: the race to control the uranium supply chain\, the fuel cycle\, and the next generation of small modular reactors that will power not just electricity grids\, but military bases\, allied nations\, and the data centers that will define who leads in artificial intelligence for the next half century. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \n \nJacob Bolinger focuses his practice in the areas of construction and government contracts\, advising clients on contract drafting\, negotiation\, and administration\, regulatory compliance\, delay disputes\, changes\, requests for equitable adjustment and claims\, and related litigation. His work spans sizable and sophisticated military\, transportation\, nuclear\, data center\, and other critical infrastructure projects\, including public and private construction projects. \n \nPhil Lookadoo is a partner in the Energy Practice Group of Haynes Boone. Phil’s practice addresses energy transactions and regulatory compliance in oil\, natural gas\, power and renewables\, commodity trading and derivatives (hedging versus spec trades)\, mergers and acquisitions\, and project development (including project O&M\, PPA\, project financing and grid interconnections). \n \nWith more than 30 years of leadership at the highest levels of both the public and private sectors\, The Honorable Douglas A. Smith serves as Global Head of Public Affairs\, Managing Director for Middle East at The Nuclear Company. Smith served as an Assistant Secretary for the Private Sector at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security\, where he became a central figure in strengthening its global business engagement. He championed public-private partnerships to support a more resilient and secure America. A recognized expert on public-private partnerships and the critical link between national security and economic security\, Smith is a frequent international speaker whose insights have informed policy and business leaders around the world.

SUMMARY:Spring 2027 Teacher Advisory - Dallas Opera
DESCRIPTION:To win the hand of Princess Turandot\, a suitor must solve three riddles; failure to do so means death. No man seems up to the challenge until an unknown prince steps forward. Will the icy princess finally warm to true love? \nAs we create our annual GYL programming\, we rely on a group of involved DFW educators to speak to the needs and wants of the local education community.
