The War in Afghanistan & the Karzai Family

Joshua Partlow, Bureau Chief in Mexico and Former Bureau Chief in Kabul, The Washington Post

Monday, August 28, 2017 - 6:00 PM
Hotel Crescent Court, Dallas

The Council's "Breach of Trust: The Crime & Corruption Series" begins with a look into a nation with an uneasy history and a political family that has links to terrorists and a way with graft.

Our speaker is Joshua Partlow, a seasoned reporter, currently The Washington Post's Mexico City bureau chief, but before that (2009-2012) he was in Afghanistan as the Post's Kabul bureau chief. And that is how he came to have an understanding of how President Hamid Karzai and his family were operating in the nation.

When Crime Pays: Money and Muscle in Indian Politics

Milan Vaishnav, Senior Fellow, South Asia Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Monday, October 23, 2017 - 6:30 PM
CBS Performance Showroom, Dallas

The second event in our series is an examination of politics and crime in India by Milan Vaishnav, Director of the South Asia Program in Washington for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

He’s the author of When Crime Pays: Money and Muscle in Indian Politics.

As he will do for our Council program on Monday, October 23, Vaishnav, according to one reviewer, “takes the readers behind the scenes and regales them with a plethora of anecdotes about the foul and fiendish men (while conspicuously leaving out the women) who win in Indian politics.”
