Nepris Videoconference: A Portrait of the UAE
Presented by North Texas educators who traveled to the United Arab Emirates through a study tour in March 2017

Thursday, November 9, 2017 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

The modern United Arab Emirates with all its richness and complexities, as well UAE’s centuries old history and cultural traditions, are often unknown to Americans. To address this gap, the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth and the Embassy of the UAE developed a program on United Arab Emirates, with a special emphasis on Emirati culture, to bring some much-needed context to the American public and, particularly, to American students and teachers. Four educators who traveled to the UAE in March of 2017 on the study tour grant will share their primary research on the country and region.

  • Dhara Lad, a Pre-AP World Geography teacher in Dallas ISD, will present on guest workers.
  • Wendy Seeliger, a World History/AP World History teacher in Lewisville ISD, will present on the partnership between the UAE and US governments.
  • Nicole Vickerman, a World Geography/Pre AP/IB World Geography teacher in Plano ISD, will present on futurism exemplified by the UAE as a “protopia” or proactive utopia.
  • Kathryn Hodgkinson, a World History & US Geography at the Hockaday School, will present on UAE history and society as a symbol of hope for the Middle East.
