A new president arrives and withdraws his nation from what many see as crucial treaties and agreements involving the country’s businesses, industries, day-to-day life, and national stability. The changes also affect other nations’ futures.
What do these alterations or abandonments of agreements mean for upcoming international negotiations? Jeremi Suri will examine such events and consequences in his Council presentation, “Withdrawal: What Is Our Word Worth?”

Suri, a previous Council speaker, holds the Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin.  He’s also the author of a well-received assessment of the job of chief executive of the United States, The Impossible Presidency: The Rise and Fall of America’s Highest Office.
At UT, Professor Suri’s courses include “strategy and decision-making, leadership, globalization, international relations, and modern history.” A prolific writer for national and regional publications, he is a co-author of Foreign Policy Breakthroughs: Cases in Successful Diplomacy.”  Suri also is the author of Henry Kissinger and the American Century.
