Tensions are on the rise again between the U.S. and Iran. One year to the day after President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the President of Iran announced that his country will no longer comply with some parts of the agreement.  For nearly two decades after the end of the Cold War, the regional power dynamics of the Middle East were relatively stable and the United States was the uncontested, dominant external power. Today, a combination of factors have dramatically transformed the geopolitics of the Middle East.

Middle East Institute President Paul Salem focuses on issues of political change, transition and conflict, as well as the regional and international relations of the Middle East. Salem is the author and editor of many articles, books and reports, including his latest book "From Chaos to Cooperation: Toward Regional Order in the Middle East.” Before joining Middle East Institute, Salem was the founding director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, Lebanon.
