2020 IPS: Global Health Care: What Is the U.S. Doing About It?
Thomas Bollyky, Council on Foreign Relations

12:00 PM Program & Luncheon
Hotel Crescent Court

Over the last century, deaths from parasites and infectious diseases have plummeted worldwide. The result? A longer life expectancy that challenges local governments to act on chronic and non-communicable diseases. While the traditional foreign aid model delivered food and medicine to countries struggling with dysfunctional governments and infrastructure, Thomas Bollyky believes the U.S. should invest in a comprehensive strategy to meet the new challenges of global health that foreign aid does not cure.

Thomas J. Bollyky is director of the global health program and senior fellow for global health, economics, and development at the Council on Foreign Relations. He was formerly a director at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative focusing on medical technology regulation and the safety of food and drug imports. He is the author of the book “Plagues and the Paradox of Progress: Why the World is Getting Healthier in Worrisome Ways.” In 2013, the World Economic Forum named Bollyky one of its global leaders under forty.
