2020 IPS: Global Finance and the New Cold War: Where Are We Headed?
James K. Galbraith, The University of Texas

Tuesday, February 4, 2020 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Event Details:

12 PM Program & Luncheon

The future of capitalism, a system economist James Galbraith believes is “increasingly at odds with democracy,” requires careful planning of a national strategy based on “regulated finance, collective security and a national purpose.” This planning should be focused on the long term interests of the middle class rather than being shaped by corporate interests and short term political goals. Above all, he says, “What the government needs most today is to regain an independent capacity to think.”

James K. Galbraith holds the Lloyd M. Bentsen Chair in Government/Business Relations and Professor of Government at the University of Texas where he directs the university’s “Inequality Project.” He is the son of economist John Kenneth Galbraith and is a prolific author of scholarly and policy articles and has published six books. Galbraith earned doctorate degrees from both Harvard and Yale and studied economics at King’s College, Cambridge. Before joining UT, he served on the U.S. congressional staff as executive director of the Joint Economic Committee.
