COVID-19 is affecting vulnerable groups at unprecedented rates, including LGBTQ+ persons who often also grapple with additional barriers to receiving health care, obtaining stable employment, and accessing social services. Among numerous critical needs, a new study pioneered by Egale, Canada's leading organization for LGBTQ+ people and issues, shows that the LGBTQ+ community has been disproportionately impacted financially by COVID-19; substantially higher than the national average. Additionally, LGBTQ+ people are significantly more likely to have a chronic illness or physical disability – and as a result, are more likely to be in self-isolation than other groups. This panel brings together global LGBTQ+ leaders to discuss the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has on LGBTQ+ communities and how decision making frameworks and policies can help protect one of the most vulnerable groups in our society.
