A Question of Power: Electricity and the Wealth of Nations
Robert Bryce, author, journalist and film producer, with Jay T. Young

Tuesday, July 7, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Tuesday, July 7, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

The digital revolution is credited as society’s great equalizer, but no modern technology is possible without electricity. Veteran journalist Robert Bryce believes the availability of electricity “determines the fates of people and nations,” but across the world it remains one of the most difficult forms of energy to produce and supply. In his latest book, Bryce explores the gap between the electricity rich and the electricity poor, a gap he describes this way: “Some three billion people live in places where per-capita electricity use is less than what's used by an average American refrigerator.” Jay Young will host this conversation with Robert Bryce.

Robert Bryce is a Texas-based author, journalist, film producer, and public speaker. He spent 12 years as a reporter for the Austin Chronicle and was the managing editor of the Houston-based Energy Tribune. Bryce is a past senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. He has published five books and his articles have appeared in numerous publications and he has appeared in dozens of network and cable TV and radio shows. Bryce’s new documentary, “Juice: How Electricity Explains the World,” will be released this year.

Jay T. Young began his career in the U.S. Government as a military analyst, serving on task forces for major military operations and authoring assessments on key issues in Latin America and the Persian Gulf. He has had a long career in business which has included senior leadership positions in the management consulting, information technology services, and diversified manufacturing industries. He is currently Vice President, Market Analysis and Development at Trinity Rail, the largest business unit of Trinity Industries. He also served for 25 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve retiring as a Captain in 2018. He holds a B.A. from Yale University, an M.A. from King’s College, University of London, and is a Ph.D. candidate at Ohio State University.
