Conditional Citizens: On Belonging in America
Laila Lalami, Novelist & Essayist

Wednesday, October 21, 2020 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Wednesday, October 21, 2020 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Novelist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Laila Lalami utilizes her compelling narrative style to describe her own path to U.S. citizenship alongside the larger history of American law and society in her new nonfiction work Conditional Citizens: On Belonging in America. Drawing on her personal identity as “an immigrant, a woman, an Arab, and a Muslim,” Lalami describes how becoming a U.S. citizen does not necessarily mean becoming “an equal member of the American family.”

Join us for a wide-ranging conversation about both Lalami’s fiction and nonfiction works with the author who The Washington Post calls “one of our most important critics of the American character.”

Lalami is the author of four novels, including The Moor’s Account, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and The Other Americans, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her essays and criticism have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and The New York Times. Born in Morocco, Lalami currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches at the University of California at Riverside.
