Not for the Faint of Heart: Lessons in Courage, Power, and Persistence
Ambassador Wendy Sherman, Director, Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School

Tuesday, October 20, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Tuesday, October 20, 2020 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Wendy Sherman wrote recently that the U.S. cannot afford to neglect its relationship with the rest of the world, saying, “Other countries have important lessons for us that we desperately need to learn.” And she believes that women have an important part to play. “Some have argued that women are acknowledged when there is a mess to clean up…” – which Sherman knows from experience, as this distinguished diplomat was one of the lead negotiators on the JCPOA for President Obama and was North Korea Policy Coordinator for President Clinton. Oftentimes in her long diplomatic career she has been the only woman in the room, making her reliance on her own core values and skillset even more of an asset to her effectiveness at the negotiating table.

Ambassador Sherman is a professor of public leadership and director at the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center. She is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group. Sherman is the former Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and served at the State Department in varying capacities under Presidents Clinton and Obama, including North Korea Policy Coordinator and chief nuclear negotiator with Iran. She was awarded the National Security Medal by President Obama. Sherman holds a M.S.W. from the University of Maryland and a B.A. from Boston University.
