With close to 15,000 refugees working in the Texas food industry, many as restaurant owners, it’s no secret that immigrants and refugees provide unique flavors and dining experiences to North Texas. At this special release of Plated Stories, a collection of “25 stories and 50 recipes shared by refugees, trafficking survivors, and asylum seekers,” Ashley Faye of Refugee Services of Texas will take us on a culinary journey across the world. Providing unique perspectives from each contributor’s story of their journey to America, while holding onto pieces of their home countries, the cookbook is a vibrant example of the unity of the human spirit made stronger through diversity.
Ashley will also be joined by Jane Gow, a former refugee and one of the cookbook's contributors. Gow, who founded Dallas's Be Kinder Coffee Project, will be putting on a special demonstration making Vietnamese coffee.
Ashley Faye is the development director at Refugee Services of Texas, where she manages donor stewardship, corporation relationships, special events, and grants. Her work in refugee services began in 2006, and she has since held numerous roles in this sphere, including as development director of an Arizona-based nonprofit focused on global health. Faye holds two B.S. degrees in justice studies and American Indian studies, as well as an M.A. in social justice and human rights with an emphasis on nonprofit management.
