Council on Foreign Relations fellow Shannon O’Neil argues that regionalization, not globalization, has not only been the biggest economic trend in the last forty years, but is also the best way forward. In examining supply chain hubs in Asia, Europe, and North America, she found that when countries have strong commercial ties with their neighbors and participate in regional production, they gain a competitive edge, employ more workers, and avoid ending up in last place on the global supply chain. O’Neill joins us on March 9 for our International Perspective Series to discuss her book The Globalization Myth: Why Regions Matter. O’Neil believes that we should be embracing and deepening regional ties to succeed in an internationally connected world rather than choosing between globalism and isolationism.

Shannon O’Neil is vice president, deputy director of studies, and Nelson & David Rockefeller senior fellow for Latin American studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. O’Neil is a known expert on global trade, supply chains, Mexico, Latin America, and democracy. She is the author of The Globalization Myth: Why Regions Matter. This follows her book Two Nationals Indivisible: Mexico, the United States, and the Road Ahead. O’Neil is a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion and is a frequent television and radio guest expert. Her private sector experience includes equity analysis and Indosuez Capital and Credit Lyonnais Securities. She holds a BA and MA from Yale University and a Ph.D in government from Harvard University.

She also serves as the public affairs advocacy liaison for the Americas. Latino Leaders magazine recognized her in 2010 as a Dallas “Thought Leader” and as one of the “Top 100 Most Influential Latinas 2020.” Flores is a member of the Hispanic 100, past president of the State Government Affairs Council, and board member of The Family Place. She is active in education reform; focusing on public school education in Dallas and is a board member of the Dallas Education Foundation and the chair of Big Thought. She is a graduate of Leadership Dallas and Leadership DISD.
