Protocol: The Power of Diplomacy
Capricia Penavic Marshall, Chief of Protocol of the United States (2009-2013)

Wednesday, August 26, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Wednesday, August 26, 2020 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Selecting the perfect gift, wearing the right dress, correctly displaying a flag — any one of these easily overlooked details could mean the success or failure of a meeting between two world leaders. But who ensures these particulars are carefully prepared for?

Capricia Penavic Marshall says, “History often appears to consist of big gestures and dramatic shifts, for every peace treaty signed, someone set the stage, using hidden influence to affect the outcome.” Marshall built a career on setting those stages, effectively facilitating some of the most important state visits and meetings that have taken place over the past three decades, proving time and again that “protocol starts the wheels of diplomacy.”

Join City of Dallas Chief of Protocol Beth Huddleston as she and Marshall pull back the curtain on the “very detailed road map for whatever interaction, big or small,” that brings together “all of the nuances of the engagement that create a major impact.”

Capricia Penavic Marshall is the ambassador-in-residence at the Atlantic Council, where she also serves as senior advisor to the Arsht Latin America Center. Beginning her career as Special Assistant to Hillary Clinton during the 1992 presidential campaign, Marshall later served as Special Assistant to the First Lady before being appointed White House Social Secretary. In 2009, Marshall became Chief of Protocol, a role she held until 2013. A first generation American of Mexican and Croatian descent, she holds a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from Purdue University and a J.D. from Case Western Reserve University.
