BOOK LAUNCH: Believers: Love and Death in Tehran
Marc Grossman, Vice Chairman, The Cohen Group; John Limbert, Career diplomat, United States Foreign Service

Friday, August 7, 2020 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Time Zone: America/Chicago
Local Time: Friday, August 7, 2020 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Marc Grossman, formerly the third ranking U.S. State Department official, and John Limbert, a career foreign officer who was one of the 52 Americans held for 444 days in Tehran beginning in 1979, have partnered to produce a novel about the tortured history of U.S./Iran relations told through the experience of a young foreign service officer in the right place at the wrong time during the Iranian revolution.

The book tells the story of fictional Nilufar Hartman, an Iranian-American junior foreign officer, who while living undercover for nearly a decade provided invaluable intelligence that was read at the highest levels of power. Jim Falk, who read the novel in one sitting, said, “The authors have done a remarkable job of writing a spy thriller against the backdrop of forty years of our troubled, broken relationship with Iran. Once I turned the first page, I could not put the book down.” Our program will extend beyond the novel to our current relations with Iran and what our options are going forward.

Ambassador Marc Grossman is well familiar to Council members. He served as the Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs until his retirement in 2005 after 29 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. After his retirement, Grossman was recalled by President Obama in 2011 to succeed Richard Holbrook as U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is Vice Chairman of The Cohen Group.

Ambassador John Limbert served mostly in the Middle East and Islamic Africa during his 34-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service. He served as Ambassador to Mauritania and Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. Limbert was among the last American diplomats to serve at the American Embassy in Tehran and holds the Department of State’s highest award – the Distinguished Service Award – and the department’s Award for Valor, which he received in 1981 after fourteen months as hostage in Iran.
