Gail Collins - As Texas Goes…
Author, As Texas Goes…; Columnist, The New York Times

Wednesday, June 27, 2012 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

As Texas Goes...

To say Texas is simply another player in national politics would be an understatement. Home to three presidents and numerous presidential candidates, the Lone Star state has long played an active role in Washington.

In her newest book, As Texas Goes…: How the Lone Star State Hijacked the National Agenda,  Gail Collins examines the important role that Texas plays in setting the national agenda. She looks at how Texas became the birthplace of the conservative political agenda as envisaged by politicians, such as Karl Rove and George H.W. Bush. Texas’ pro-business practices that set the par for many states looking to increase revenue and its fierce championing of states’ rights that have inspired movements such as the Tea Party. As Ms. Collins astutely remarks, “what happens in Texas doesn’t stay in Texas anymore.”

Gail Collins received her bachelor’s in journalism from Marquette University and her master’s in government from University of Massachusetts Amherst. In 1972, she founded the Connecticut State News Bureau. After selling the company in 1977 she worked as a columnist for the New York Daily News, Newsday, and many other publications. In 1995 She joinedThe New York Times and in 2001 was made the first female Editorial Page Editor. She also teaches a course at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and is the author of four previously published books.

The program will be moderated by Glenn Hunter, executive editor for D CEO.
