David McCullough

Hear two-time Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough speak on his latest achievement — the book he’s waited years to write.

In The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris, McCullough reveals the untold stories of talented American artists, writers, doctors, politicians and others who traveled to the “City of Lights” between 1830 and 1900 to gain the experience they needed to impact their crafts and, ultimately, U.S. history. McCullough uses as reference material the letters and journals of several dozen of these 19th-century Americans, including:

  • Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor in America
  • Charles Sumner, a lawyer who became the most powerful, unyielding voice for abolition in the U.S. Senate
  • Samuel F. B. Morse, whose inspiration for the telegraph came from France
  • Writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain and Henry James, along with painters Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent

David McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback. His other widely praised books are 1776, Brave Companions, The Great Bridge and The Johnstown Flood. He has been honored with the National Book Foundation Distinguished Contribution to American Letters Award, the National Humanities Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In lieu of a book signing, signed copies of Mr. McCullough’s book, The Greater Journey, will be available for purchase on site at the event.
