His Excellency Ebrahim Rasool

Seventeen years after the end of apartheid, South Africa has emerged with a robust economy that is attracting increased foreign investment, with nearly 600 U.S. companies doing business in the region. The country gained international attention in 2010 when it hosted the most-watched World Cup in history. As the continent’s largest economy, South Africa has also sought to expand its role in African politics. In 2011, it began a two-year term on the United Nations Security Council and recently voted in favor of military sanctions against Libya’s leader, Colonel Muammar Qaddafi. However, South Africa has since changed its position on Libya, with President Jacob Zuma calling for an end to the UN sanctions and arranging two meetings with Qaddafi to discuss an end to the conflict.

What is the current condition of U.S.-South Africa relations, especially in the wake of the Libyan conflict? What are the most popular emerging growth markets in the region? What are key issues that affect the country’s foreign policy? Ebrahim Rasool, Ambassador of South Africa to the U.S., will speak on these issues and more in his address to a Council audience.

Prior to his current position, Ambassador Rasool served as a member of Parliament in the National Assembly, special advisor to the state president of the Republic of South Africa and premier of the Western Cape Province.Ambassador Rasool will also speak for Meridian: Global Young Professionals at a special meet-and-greet on Monday, June 20.
